Week of September 28 - October 2

Dear MCS Community,

I am happy to focus my weekly message on a new topic.  In order for teachers to best instruct students they need to understand where each child is at in their learning trajectory.  At MCS we determine that information in a couple of ways.  In all grades K-6 we use Track My Progress as our tool for gathering student proficiency data.  If you would like to learn more about this tool please feel free to explore this website, trackmyprogress.com.  Over the past two weeks students in all grades have completed this online assessment.  The next step is for teachers to analyze the data and make a plan for how to move student learning forward.  There will be a brief presentation of the overall results during the October Norwich School Board meeting for those of you who are interested.

In grades K-2 we also administer the Primary Observation Assessment.  This assessment allows us to get a snapshot of each student’s literacy development.  This tool checks letter/sound proficiency, comprehension, sight word knowledge, and other aspects of early literacy development.  Just like with Track My Progress we use this information to plan next steps for student progress.  Students typically enjoy this work as it is done 1:1 with an adult.

Typically we would have had these assessments completed before now, but this is not a typical year!  One part of our inservice day on October 9th will be spent allowing teams of teachers to analyze assessment data and plan for next steps.  It is also worth noting that teachers use other types of less formal assessments such as classroom work samples, teacher observations of students, classroom tests and quizzes, writing samples, and much more to supplement what we gather from Track My Progress and the Primary Observation Assessment.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend weather,

Shawn
