Special Days at MCS

Our philosophy states that "We cherish our traditions and our school's place in our community." Some of our traditions are celebrations of some very special days:

Green-up Day
Green Up Days occur in the fall or spring, under the direction of LEEEP. Stewardship of the environment has always been a part of the LEEEP program with Green Up days and other community service projects which the classes undertake, such as spreading mulch on the Nature Area trails.

Kite Day
Kite Day takes place at Huntley Meadow in the spring.

May Fest
Our May Festival is a whole-school celebration of spring. May Fest takes place in the school's meadow area. Come May, look for colorful banners, May Poles, flower crowns, dancers, singers and lots of musicians!

Track & Field Day
Track and Field Day in late May or early June is an afternoon of running, throwing and jumping events for fifth and sixth graders at Marion Cross School. It follows the physical education Track and Field unit during which students are taught and practice a softball throw for distance, baseball throw for accuracy, shot put, and frisbee throw for accuracy, the 50 and 75 yard dash, 220, 440 and 880 run, the running long jump, the high jump and a 440 Relay.

All students sign up and compete in their own gender and age groups in three events of their own choosing. Teachers and parents help measure, score and time the events. Homemade ribbons are awarded for first, second and third places. When students are not scheduled to participate, they are free to watch other events.

Students are encouraged to work on personal goals and to participate in events that appeal to them or they enjoy, not just those they feel they excel at.

Although the first three place finishers are recognized, participation and sportsmanship are emphasized. Students can compare their achievements against school records for the past 23 years.
