Seedfolks
Sixth Grade English, Fall 2005
Peter Anderson, English Teacher
Marion Cross School sixth graders enjoyed reading Seedfolks, a novel by Paul Fleischman, as part of the Vermont Humanities Council's Vermont READs project, a state-wide one book reading program. At home, students read parts of the book aloud to family members and listened as others read to them. They were asked to take notes as they read. Each day they discussed the reading in small groups in class. They then wrote short essays comparing and contrasting characters, analyzing a selection of text, and explaining why they admired a particular character. Finally they created line drawings, scanned them and added the images to their pages.
As part of this reading project, they also participated in community events organized by Lucinda Walker at the Norwich Public Library and visited the Farm and Wilderness Camps' organic gardens in Plymouth, Vermont. Vern Grubinger of the UVM Extension Service visited the class to talk about sustainability in Vermont agriculture.
You can link to the students' writing and drawings below. I hope you enjoy the fine work.
